European trade fairs for manufacturers

The European trade fairs that matter for food, beauty, medtech, industrial and consumer goods makers, with dates, and how to book buyer meetings.

EFC 9 min read Sectors

In most sectors, a small number of European trade fairs are where buyers and manufacturers meet: SIAL Paris and Anuga for food, Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna for beauty, MEDICA for medical technology, HANNOVER MESSE for industrial goods, Ambiente for consumer goods, and IFA for consumer electronics. A manufacturer from outside the EU gets value from one of them by booking meetings with named buyers before the doors open and following up promptly afterwards. Collecting cards at a stand and writing later is a weak substitute.

The table below lists the fairs, with dates checked on the organisers’ own sites or official listings. The rest of the article is about how to use one.

Why fairs still matter in Europe

Germany alone gives a sense of the scale. According to AUMA, the association of the German trade fair industry, Germany hosted 158 national and international trade fairs in 2025, with 150,260 exhibitors and 8.33 million visitors. Two thirds of the exhibitors, 99,190 companies, came from abroad, and 2.78 million visitors travelled in from other countries. Four of the ten largest exhibition centres in the world are in Germany: Hannover, Frankfurt am Main, Cologne and Düsseldorf.

The quality of the audience matters more than the size. AUMA states that 63 percent of all trade fair visitors are decision-makers, and that 91 percent of foreign visitors have a decisive or co-decisive influence on business decisions. A fair is one of the few places where a manufacturer can meet several of the buyers it wants in the same three or four days.

Food, drink and own brands

Food has two large generalist fairs, and their next editions fall a year apart. SIAL Paris runs in October 2026 and is aimed at food industry professionals. Anuga in Cologne runs in October 2027. Anuga describes itself as ten trade shows under one roof, with more than 8,000 exhibitors from 110 countries and more than 145,000 visitors from 190 countries, and names its audience as international decision-makers from retail and foodservice.

Specialist fairs are often more efficient for a focused range. ISM in Cologne is organised for 2027 as three linked shows: ingredients, manufacturing, and finished snacks and sweets for retail. BIOFACH in Nuremberg is where, in the organiser’s words, the international organic food industry comes together. A maker that wants to supply retailers’ own brands has a fair built for that purpose: PLMA’s World of Private Label in Amsterdam, covered with the rest of the own-brand process in private label in Europe.

Beauty, medtech, industrial and consumer goods

Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna runs from 18 to 20 March 2027 for its packaging and perfumery and cosmetics halls, with its hair, nail and salon hall open until 21 March. The organiser reports 3,104 participating companies and more than 255,000 attendees at the 2026 edition.

MEDICA in Düsseldorf runs from 16 to 19 November 2026. The organiser’s own figures for MEDICA 2025 show 4,821 exhibitors from 70 countries and 78,000 visitors from 160 countries.

HANNOVER MESSE runs from 5 to 8 April 2027 at the Hannover exhibition grounds, from 9.00 to 18.00 each day.

Ambiente in Frankfurt am Main runs from 29 January to 2 February 2027. It addresses retailers as well as commercial end users, with buyers and decision-makers from all types of outlets across the distribution chain.

IFA in Berlin runs from 3 to 7 September 2027. It is open to both trade and private visitors, with separate hours for each, which matters when planning buyer meetings: the trade hours are the working hours.

Walk the fair before you book a stand

A stand is the most expensive way to attend a fair for the first time. A manufacturer that has not yet been to a sector’s main fair learns more by walking it as a visitor first.

Walking tells you who exhibits next to whom, which distributors take stands and which only visit, how buyers move through the halls, and which competitors are present. It also tells you whether the buyers you want attend that fair at all. Some categories are bought at the generalist fairs; others at a specialist show that the generalists overshadow.

A stand makes sense once there is a reason for buyers to come to it: a product already known to some of them, a launch worth seeing, or meetings booked in advance that the stand gives a place to hold.

Meetings are booked before the doors open

The buyers who matter plan their days before they arrive. By the first morning of a fair, the best slots in a buyer’s diary are often already taken.

That turns the fair into the last step of a process, not the first. A manufacturer that wants meetings with specific buyers should:

  1. Name the buyers first: which retail chains and distributors, and which category buyer inside each one.
  2. Check who attends, from exhibitor lists, the organiser’s visitor programmes and the companies’ own announcements. Some organisers sell separate buyer tickets; ISM, for example, offers a VIP buyer ticket.
  3. Write in advance with a short, specific reason to meet: what the product is in the buyer’s own terms, where the stock will sit in the EU, and the lead time to their warehouse.
  4. Propose a time and a place, on the stand or elsewhere in the hall.
  5. Prepare a one-page brief for each meeting, with what the buyer already carries and what the product would sit beside.

A fair with qualified meetings booked in advance is a working week. A fair attended in hope of passers-by tends to produce a stack of cards and very few answers.

What happens in the weeks after

Buyers leave a fair with dozens of conversations. The ones that continue are the ones followed up quickly, with what was promised: samples, a price list, the product data sheet, and an answer to the question the buyer asked at the stand.

Timing matters here as well. A buyer met at a fair in October may be preparing a category review that opens months later. The follow-up should be aimed at that window, with the data the review will ask for, rather than at a general “nice to meet you”.

How this runs at EFC

EFC helps companies from outside the EU operate and grow in Europe and around the world. In its business development work, a fair is one week in a longer sequence: the buyer map names who to meet, approaches go out beforehand in wording the client has approved, each meeting has a short written briefing, and the follow-up continues after the halls close. The client decides which relationships to take forward.

The question asked at almost every stand, where the stock sits and how fast it arrives, is answered from EFC’s operation in Portugal, inside the EU customs union, through fulfilment, quoted separately. For manufacturers weighing North America as well, the same approach is set out on business development in the United States.

What this article is not

This is a selection, not a complete list. Every sector has further national and specialist fairs, some of them more useful for a particular category than the large names above. The dates come from the organisers’ own sites or official listings. Organisers can change dates, so confirm each one with the organiser before booking anything. Where a product is sold on clinical or technical authority, as at MEDICA, the business development work is a weaker fit; the operation still applies.

It is also not a recommendation to exhibit. Whether a stand is worth its cost depends on the product, the buyers, and what is prepared before the fair.

Where a fair sits in the wider European work is set out on business development in Europe.

The questions this answers

What this piece answers, in plain sentences.

Which trade fairs should a manufacturer attend in Europe?

In most sectors a small number of fairs are where buyers and manufacturers meet: SIAL Paris and Anuga for food, Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna for beauty, MEDICA for medical technology, HANNOVER MESSE for industrial goods, Ambiente for consumer goods and IFA for consumer electronics. Specialist fairs such as ISM, BIOFACH and PLMA's World of Private Label are often more efficient for a focused range. The list is a selection, not a complete one.

When are the main European trade fairs in 2026 and 2027?

According to the organisers' sites and official listings: SIAL Paris 17 to 21 October 2026, MEDICA 16 to 19 November 2026, Ambiente 29 January to 2 February 2027, ISM 31 January to 3 February 2027, BIOFACH 16 to 19 February 2027, Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna 18 to 20 March 2027, HANNOVER MESSE 5 to 8 April 2027, PLMA World of Private Label 25 and 26 May 2027, IFA 3 to 7 September 2027 and Anuga 9 to 13 October 2027. Organisers can change dates, so each one is worth confirming with the organiser before booking.

Is it worth exhibiting at a European trade fair?

It depends on the product, the buyers and what is prepared before the fair. A stand is the most expensive way to attend a fair for the first time, and a manufacturer that has not yet been to a sector's main fair learns more by walking it as a visitor first. A stand makes sense once there is a reason for buyers to come to it: a product already known to some of them, a launch worth seeing, or meetings booked in advance.

How do you get meetings with buyers at a trade fair?

By booking them before the doors open, because the buyers who matter plan their days in advance. The sequence is to name the buyers, check who attends, write in advance with a short and specific reason to meet, propose a time and place, and prepare a one-page brief for each meeting. Follow-up after the fair is aimed at the buyer's next category review, with the data that review will ask for.
